I’d like to share some knowledge to understanding what we buy and eat.
For many items sold at the supermarket, the manufacturer wants to give the best impression of itself. Usually, this means label that gives you an impression of higher quality that what it actually is. Today I will share about a few example products based on the Malaysia Food Regulations Act 1985 (FRA). PDF download here.
Some things that look like butter (eg Butterlite), are actually processed palm oil to look and roughly taste like butter, and called “lepa susu” not mentega. Some things which we assume are ice cream (eg Nestle Neopolitan), are actually “frozen confection” not ice cream. Why aren’t they labelled butter and ice cream respectively?
The Food Regulation Act (FRA) has a list of requirements for various products. For example, the Peanut Butter section is pretty detailed:

259 Peanut butter.
(1) Peanut butter shall be the product prepared by grinding clean, sound, roasted peanut kernels that have been decorticated.
(2) Peanut butter-
(a) shall contain not less than-
(i) 85 per cent of peanut; and
(ii) 20 per cent of protein;
(b) shall contain not more than-
(i) 55 per cent of edible fat and edible oil; and
(ii) 3 per cent of water; and
(c) may contain-
(i) sugar or glucose or both;
(ii) not more than-
(aa) 2 per cent of salt; and
(bb) 5 per cent of hydrogenated vegetable oil.
(3) Peanut butter may contain permitted food conditioner and permitted antioxidant.
(4) Peanut butter shall comply with the microbiological standard prescribed in regulation 39.

If the ‘peanut butter’ you make does not meet these requirements, you cannot call it “peanut butter”. You may instead call it “peanut spread”, or something else that is not restricted by the FRA.
Once you start paying attention to the product designation, you notice that the cheaper products don’t use normal terms you expect. Mayo vs mayonnaise. Lepa susu vs mentaga. Susu isian vs susu pekat. Dairy snack vs yoghurt. Creamer vs milk.
If you see something that looks like tomato ketchup but is called “dressing”, then you know that product does not meet the requirements for "tomato sauce or tomato ketchup" in paragraph 343 of the FRA
Trick to be aware of:
Naming the product using the designation. Eg, ButterLite is the product name, but it is not butter - the product is "dairy spread." Or naming your cake "ButterCake" when it's just cake made with margarine. Naming your salmon "Norwegian" brand, so you can sell Norwegian salmon (farmed in Tasmania lol). Describing the product as "like cream cheese" or "like buttebuttery" means its literally like butter, but its NOT butter. Calling it something that is close to but not the actual product, eg "creamy cheez" not cream cheese.

BIS warns: Three quarters of retail Bitcoin investors are in the red

Somewhere between 73 and 81 percent of retail Bitcoin buyers are likely to be into the negative on their investment, according to research published Monday by the Bank of International Settlements (BIS).
In other words: the Bitcoin they bought is now worth less. Bitcoin is down 73 percent in the past year, and up 155 percent in the past five years. Losses are only realized upon sale.
The Switzerland-based bank for other central banks wanted to understand why retail investors continue to participate in cryptocurrency exchanges to trade tokens like Bitcoin. It's a mystery, given that people don't generally use cryptocurrencies to make payments, to measure value, or to finance real-world investments.
BIS published its findings in a working paper titled "Crypto trading and Bitcoin prices: evidence from a new database of retail adoption."
The paper's authors – Raphael Auer, Giulio Cornelli, Sebastian Doerr, Jon Frost and Leonardo Gambacorta – created a database of crypto exchange apps used by retail investors daily in 95 countries between 2015 and 2022.
They found that when the price of Bitcoin rises, more people decide to download and use crypto exchange apps. These users, the researchers observed, are disproportionately younger and male – the most risk-seeking segment of the population. And this group ends up fueling the profits of larger investors, who sell their holdings as new market participants drive up the price.
"[A]t the time of writing, 73–81 percent of users had likely lost money on their investments in cryptocurrencies," the paper reveals. "Analysis of blockchain data finds that, as prices were rising and smaller users were buying Bitcoin, the largest holders (the so-called 'whales' or 'humpbacks') were selling – making a return at the smaller users' expense."
This trend, the researchers argue, invites further scrutiny of claims that cryptocurrencies will "democratize" the financial system.
"Our findings raise concerns that individual decisions are backward-looking and that many retail investors are not fully informed of the risk or volatility of the crypto sector," the authors conclude.
"This paper seems very accurate and matches my lived experience," said crypto critic and software engineer Stephen Diehl in a message to The Register. "Most people onboarded during the pandemic lockdowns, and since then the market has collapsed – so it's entirely unsurprising most of them are at a loss."
The BIS data on Bitcoin losses is consistent with the loss rates experienced by those investing in other highly speculative financial instruments.
In 2011, Justin Hughes, managing member of Philadelphia Financial Management of San Francisco, urged the US Securities and Exchange Commission to regulate off-exchange foreign exchange trading (retail FX, or forex) to protect retail investors.
"[A]pproximately 70 percent of customers lose money every quarter and on average 100 percent of a retail customer's investment is lost in less than 12 months," he wrote [PDF]. Stronger forex regulations [PDF] arrived two years later.
And in 2016, the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said that 82 percent of retail investors trading contracts for differences (CFDs) – financial contracts that pay the difference in the settlement price between opening and closing trades – lost money.
Hughes observed in his letter that speculators would get better investment results from gambling in a casino, where a mere 56 percent of players lose "come" bets in craps or 58 percent lose playing basic strategy in blackjack.
Retail Bitcoin investors don't appear to be getting those odds.

Emporia touchSMART V188 review - EU Whatsapp flip phone

I've been using an Emporia touchSMART (V188) for the past month after switching from an iPhone SE. It's the one that works best for me out of all the ones I've tried so I thought I'd post a review to help other people find a phone that worked for them.
TLDR
Flip phone with Android under the hood is a good half-way house for those who want a dumphone but can't find one that runs THAT app. Looks great and is reliable, but typing is cumbersome and the camera lens placement makes photography a challenge.

About
The touchSMART V188 is a flip phone for seniors that runs a hobbled version of Android. Emporia are an Austrian company so the phone mostly caters for the EU market. Emporia tech support are very nice and easy to get hold of by phone, but don't ask them anything more technical than a senior would, and don't expect them to help you if you brick your phone by fiddling with the Android installation. The phone works pretty well out of the box, although with some technical know-how* can be customised (de-hobbled).
Price is officially around £150 but I picked up handsets for £20-50 on eBay. Standby time is officially 200 hours but more like 50 hours with data enabled. It's designed for EU network standards but the supported frequencies are available at the back of the guide if you want to check.
* I'm a long-time iPhone user but I managed to work out Android factory-reset, sideloading, customising defaults and switching launchers in a few days.

My requirements (yours may vary)
I was looking for a dumbphone that could act as my main phone, but behave as a phone rather than as a pocket computer. This means it needs to have calls, messaging, and ideally some kind of maps app in case I get lost. Most of my banking apps are on my iPhone so I expect to still carry that around, but switched off unless in use. Hotspot would be handy as the iPhone would be device-only.
My family all communicate on Whatsapp as we're based in three different countries. This meant I really wanted a dumbphone that ran Whatsapp as they often call me via it. Typing on a T9 keyboard is a pain though, so I also needed a phone that could login to whatsapp web (so I can type on a computer). I've also got a personal preference for flip phones because it protects the screen, and opening/closing the phone for calls feels very form-follows-function (I'm sure German has a precise word for it).

Pros (potential dealmakers)

Runs Whatsapp and Whatsapp web
Wifi hotspot
If you really need an app (like maps), you can install it via bluetooth
The top screen is a touchscreen and is high resolution
GPS and Bluetooth
Software seems good quality if basic (better than KaiOS and fairly snappy)

Cons (potential dealbreakers)

No predictive text and no speech-to-text.
Any messing around with Android on this phone is at your own risk. Tech support are lovely but will not be able to help you.
FM radio only works if you use the supplied headphones as they contain the antenna
Only for European network standards (AT, BE, CZ, DE, DK, ES, FI, FR, GB, HR, HU, IE, IT, NL, NO, PL, PT, SE, SI, SK, SZ, TR).
No pre-installed maps app

Bonus points

Data use is pretty low (handy for roaming)
Has a basic web browser but it's far too tiny to distract you
Open to accept call and close to hang up
Outer display gives you the time, a few notifications, and caller ID
Comes with a charging cradle which means your phone can have a home that is not the floor

Annoyances

Rear camera placement is ludicrous. You will struggle.
No in-built QR scanner (not a dealbreaker but was pretty annoying)
Outer display is already pretty scratched after a month of use
Dedicated Whatsapp button only works if you stick to in-built launcher
SMS notification icon only displays if using in-built SMS app
Sometimes the button interface has issues (I can't open Whatsapp chats with buttons alone)
Can't full read menu items

Hardware
Phone feels pretty good, higher build quality than the Nokia 2720, MUCH better screen, with a resolution that feels basically the same as an iPhone. This is handy because the screen is small and sometimes you will need to display things on it that were designed for bigger phones (I had to show a hotel booking reference to an immigration official). The touchscreen is a life-saver in this situation as it allows you to easily zoom in on things the same way you would on a regular smartphone. It's about as wide as my thumb when closed and fits easily into most pockets (anyone who wears women's jeans will know what I'm talking about). The phone comes with two backs for the case, one with an SOS button, which can be programmed to call emergency contacts via the SOS app. It also comes with a charging cradle, which is a nice touch, although you can also charge it with a regular micro USB cable.

Camera
This is probably the biggest bugbear, so this gets its own section. The phone has front and rear camera. The rear camera is 5MP and fine for most photographs, although doesn't handle low lighting well and your photos may be blurry. Basically it's the camera from your 2010 phone. This is all fine.
The problem lies with the lens placement. You'd expect the camera lens to be placed at the top of the screen, but it's at the top of the rear section. This means that it's not pointing where you think it is, and your fingers are covering it. Expect to spend a few seconds working out where the camera is pointing whenever you decide to use it as there's a 15-ish degree angle between the sections when the phone is flipped open. You can try moving your fingers off the lens, but because of the centre of gravity, you will probably drop the phone, or at least lose your shot. The best solution to take pictures that I've found is to either hold the phone sideways or place the camera lens between your second and third finger. This would be easier to do if the camera lens wasn't completely flush with the back of the phone, so I'm planning to add some bumpers around it.

Typing
Second biggest bugbear, this phone has no predictive (T9) text, nor does it have speech-to-text like most KaiOS phones. Remember how you used to text in the late 90s? Hope you still have that 7777-for-S muscle memory. Typing on this phone is SLOW. I'm hoping predictive text might get added via a later software update.

Software
The phone runs Android, but you wouldn't guess it based on the interface that's been stuck on top. The default interface isn't bad, although some of the text is too big. Some of the settings menu items aren't readable as they've been cropped off by the large font, so you have to guess. The software is updated fairly regularly via a built-in software update app. You occasionally see glimpses of Android if you try to do things like factory reset, they've done a pretty good job of hiding it though.
The phone comes with Whatsapp preinstalled, as well as a camera app, weather app, calculator, SMS app, internet browser, calendar, contacts, alarm clock, music, radio, and emergency SOS app. The notifications for SMS and Whatsapp messages are pretty intrusive but I think that you can turn them off. The camera doesn't have a built-in QR code reader, which is a bit annoying if you go to restaurants that have got rid of paper menus because everyone can just scan a QR code on their smartphone instead.
Personally I added Google maps, Citymapper and Nova launcher to the phone. Still looking for a QR scanner but I'm happy to hotspot that to my iPhone until then.

Data use
I'm adding this section in because my test-drive of this phone was actually whilst on holiday. I was pleasantly surprised by how little data the phone used. I'd periodically switch on data to check the weather or Whatsapp messages and it used about 20kb each time. By the end of the holiday I had roaming permanently on as my carrier was only charging 10p per MB, and the phone was using about 1MB a day. For best results set Whatsapp to only download images when requested (each one is about 300kb). Web pages will load the desktop version so expect a couple of MB for each page on the browser, so stick to the Wifi for these. If you side-load other apps you may see your usage go up.

How I use it
I still have my old iPhone SE in my bag for certain apps like banking, Covid passes (still important when travelling), or using Apple pay. It stays switched off until I need it though as anything high priority should be coming through the flip phone. This is great for my personal sanity. My personal smartphone weakness was reading the news, and then when I'd finished that reading the comments on the news, and then reading the twitter comments on the news. I can't do that on the iPhone now as it doesn't have a sim card installed.

Transition tips (Whatsapp and contacts)
The biggest transition issue was Whatsapp. There is no way to transfer your whatsapp chat history from iPhone to Android, and it will become inaccessible once you move phones unless you want to keep playing Whatsapp musical chairs with your phone number. Cry, scream, make your peace with it, it's gone. Make sure you save your photos.
iPhones don't save contacts to the sim, which is a pain when switching phones. To transfer your contacts to the Emporia, sync them to iCloud and export the ones you want as vCard files. Bluetooth these to the phone and they should install. Remember you won't be able to find people on Whatsapp unless you have their phone number on the sim (your groups are safe).

Competition
I tried and ruled out a few KaiOS phones:

Alcatel 2088 (Candybar)
Nokia 2720 Flip (Flip phone)

The main issues with KaiOS were no Whatsapp web support, KaiOS feels buggy as hell, low screen resolution which makes everything on the UI huge (think back to your classic iPod), and Google Voice assistant isn't accurate enough to replace a QWERTY keyboard.
The best QWERTY android phone I had was the blackberry KeyONE however this definitely qualified as a smartphone and was HUGE in my pocket (did I mention women's jeans?)
I've heard good things about the following but haven't tried them. Both are reported to have Whatsapp web:
